Hurricane Aftermath

I'm having trouble writing today. Since I woke up this morning at 7:30, I've been checking the news on New Orleans about hourly. I only knew one person in New Orleans, and I know he's safely in Georgia. But I keep thinking about all the ones who couldn't evacuate. The reports from the city are unbelievable. I keep wondering how this could be happening in our country.

We had stronger than usual winds and an overcast sky today, the last remnants of Katrina as she moved north. I stayed in and looked for jobs and sent resumes and checked the news as long as I could. Then I went for a walk. I thought maybe getting out would help clear my head and make me feel less sick about the hurricane. I walked up to the Penn bookstore and drank some tea while looking at law class outlines and books. Then I walked back. It's only about two and a half miles round trip. I have a blister on my left heel, I'm not used to wearing real shoes.

I can't get the phrase "all the dead bodies floating in the water" out of my head.

I'm looking forward to going to nyc this weekend to see Steffany and Eric. I miss my friends.

That's really all I can write for now. Hope you are all safe, and that your friends and loved ones are safe too.

I had a student actually suggest that we take a school wide field trip and go to New Orleans to help. I don't know what a bunch of middle schoolers would do, but I was impressed by how much he wanted to be there and how much he wanted to help. I thank my lucky stars every night that it wasn't us. -Em
