I must have watched Anne of Green Gables more than twenty times growing up. It was a comfort, something to slip into like a comfortable nightgown when I had a cold. I can remember the feel of heavy blankets keeping me warm in the den while Anne first met Diana, when she broke the slate over Gil's head, when she rhapsodized about puffed sleeves on a dress. One of the things I loved best about Anne was her irrepressible optimism about the future. Tomorrow was always "fresh, without any mistakes in it." When (inevitably) I was well and had to go back to school or work, there would be a few magical days that I remembered the amazing gift that each day is. I would appreciate the fresh opportunities that come with every dawn. Then, as days went by, I would slip back into the flow and believe that each day had to continue the mistakes of the past.
At 25, I rarely have time to watch my Anne-girl. But the belief that each day can- and should- be seen as a new and special chance to live as I imagine creeps into my heart on certain days. New Year usually passes me by, but Epiphany always stops me in my tracks. Maybe because the name itself reminds me that a greater knowledge is there if I stop to absorb it. Maybe because it's my nephew's birthday, and something about him inspires me to embrace happiness. Either way, I hope that I can remember the beauty of each perfect dawn as classes begin again...tomorrow.
