Little known fact: I'm absurdly fond of my iTunes playlists. Really. There's no excuse for how much I like them.
They're generally named after towns. For example, some of my playlists are titled: London (rainy songs), Boston (patriotic songs), Montpellier (songs I listened to this summer while my friends were in France), Cork (Irish tunes), Atlanta (basketball songs), and Hollywood (soundtrack of my life; I was born in Hollywood, FL).
Lately I've been adding to a mix called Medianoche. It's named after my favorite sandwich, I get it at Cuban delis when I have access to them. The sandwich is named "midnight" because I guess people normally eat the sandwich in the middle of the night. I'm not certain about that. But I like the way medianoche rolls off my tongue, and most of the music on the list is good music for the middle of the night.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this story, but I wanted to share some of the best songs I've found lately. This is what my iPod has been playing, and the line I love best from each song:
1. Some of Us; Starsailor
"Some of us laugh, some of us cry
Some of us smoke, some of us lie
But it's all just the way that we cope with our lives."
2. Born; Over the Rhine
"I was born to laugh
I learned to laugh through my tears
I was born to love
I'm gonna learn to love without fear"
3. The Day You Fell Apart; The New Frontiers
"It seems a waste of time
to grow old alone
We've been dying since the day we fell apart"
4. Follow the Lights; Ryan Adams
"Follow the lights that line the streets
connecting telephones
Follow the lights from house to house
and they will lead you home"
5. Dandelion; Antje Duvekot
"You were looking for a tea light
And I will always be a forest fire"
6. Lullabye for a Stormy Night; Vienna Teng
"The same rain that draws you near me
falls on rivers and land, on forests and sand
makes the beautiful world that you'll see in the morning."
7. Beautiful Moment; Rosebud
"Somewhere it waits for you
On a carousel in Central Park
Apple caramel before it's dark"
8. Open Road; Kris Delmhorst
"And I will take what I need with me, I will not take what I don't
And I will say that I'll be back here but I'll know that I won't
And I will live with empty pockets, I will live with empty sleeves
And I will know that there is nothing in this world I cannot leave"
9. Boston; Augustana
"I think I need a sunrise, I'm tired of the sunset,
I hear it's nice in the summer, some snow would be nice"
10. Cathedrals; Jump Little Children
"In the cathedrals of New York and Rome
There is a feeling that you should just go home
And spend a lifetime finding out just where that is"
11. Wanted; Holly Brook
"I will be wanted, I will not fall from grace
Daylight has waited just to live upon your face
I won't be haunted, I will not sleep to dream
All that I wanted has been right in front of me"
12. You Are Mine; Mute Math
"Everyone has their obsession
consuming thoughts, consuming time
they hold high their prized possession
it defines the meaning of their life
You are mine"
13. Did You Think; Adrina Thorpe
"Did you think that my love was so blind...
to your flaws, to your fears, everything you try to hide
Don't you know, I don't care, you're worth so much more to me"
14. Autumn Fallin'; Jaymay
"And I believe it was you
Who I wanted to be walking next to
And I believe we were friends
and I believe we will be again"
15. Don't Ever; Missy Higgins
"We'll get a house where the trees hang low and pretty little flowers
On our windowsill will grow"
1 pink picket thought(s):
How do you find this music? I never hear any of these songs until you expose me to them and for that, I'm grateful! :)
Perhaps you should start working on a Seattle playlist.
