Happy Endings.

Grey's Anatomy had a quote during one episode that was fairly close to this:

"You know when you were a little kid and you believed in fairy tales? That fantasy of what your life would be – white dress, prince charming who’d carry you away to a castle on a hill. You’d lie in your bed at night and close your eyes and you had complete and utter faith. Santa clause, the tooth fairy, prince charming –they were so close you could taste them. But eventually you grow up and one day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears. Most people turn to the things and people they can trust. But the thing is, it’s hard to let go of that fairy tale entirely because almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope and faith that one day they would open their eyes and it would all come true."

This quote applies to every one of my female friends. Every one. It also applies to most of my guy friends, who are strangely addicted to the white picket fence/white knight mentality.

Unfortunately, none of my very worthy friends have yet to attain the kind of fairy tale they hope for. We all get close- we walk across stages at graduations, we walk down aisles in weddings, we hold newborns, we get perfect jobs, we buy houses. This quarterlife stage has lots of milestones.

But nobody's found bliss.

It makes my heart ache that so many of my friends search for a happy ending that isn't quite in reach. Every beautiful bride feels pressure within months, sometimes days, to keep a perfect home and ensure domestic tranquility. Every new job brings late hours without overtime pay. The houses have roof issues, the babies are premature or sick and need constant attention. Such is life.

But are there people who get to live the fairy tale? Are we drawn to the stories because life cannot ever attain their perfection, or because we're looking for tips? I want to believe that my friends will find their happy endings if they get through enough difficulties. But what if there are no happy endings out there? What if Cinderella got the only Prince Charming?

The thing that annoys me most about fairy tales is that the heroines (if you can call them that) just basically were a bunch of motherless beauties who sat around and waited for the happy ending.

Why didn't Cinderella beat up her stepmother, march down to the Prince's door, and demand to try on her slipper? Why didn't Snow White pay off the henchman to whack the evil queen instead of running off into the woods and becoming a maid for seven midgets?

Give me a break, girls. Betty Friedan didn't go on a crusade for this.

I think that perhaps your friends - male and female - might be under the same fairy tale misconception. I'm guilty of it, too. Sure, we'd all like to think, "Some day my prince will come." Well, it's a bunch of bullshit if you ask me.

Go out and seek the life you want. It's never going to be perfect 100% of the time, but at least you can go to bed at night knowing that no magic spell or poisoned apple is going to keep you from achieving your dreams.

And if the story continued past the ending, I think we'd learn that Prince Charming is gay. They're called fairy tales for a reason. Am I right, or am I right?

There is no fairy tale endings. Life is life. We must learn to enjoy it as it is and as it comes. I wasted almost all of my twenties wishing for this and for that only to open my eyes one day and find I was in my thirties. I stopped waiting for the fairy tale life and started to enjoy what was right in front of me. Sure there are always obstacles that seam to appear just when you least need it, but it just makes you appreciate the smooth times a little more. Now I'm in my forties, and for the first time in my life I feel so comfortable. No I am not a size 6 or anywhere near that. No I do not have the perfect husband, but he loves me and I love him. No, I don't make what I would call a nice income, but we have enough to live somewhat comfortable. No, everyday is not filled with sunshine, but if it isn't I try and make it that way.
Anyway my point is ---You are a wonderful person with TREMENDOUS potential. You are going to have a great life, and see and do great things. Enjoy the time you have now---what you are doing now. It will all change soon, in the blink of an eye. You will look back and wonder where the time went. ( And once you have a family where did the peace go, lol)
I hope you don't take this as a sermon, I just want you to know I think you are a special person with special gifts. Enjoy who you are right now(you just might find you a living someone elses fairytale;)
Since I can't remember my password I had to be anonymous, lol
