The Great Book Plan.

I have difficulty not buying books that I think I'm going to want to read. Well, actually, I can usually say no to full priced books, but I have trouble saying no to books that are marked down- leftovers, used copies, the well-worn or almost-new castoffs of others. Thus I have a large stack of books that I was thrilled to find super cheap...that I have yet to read. So, in the spirit of First-Quarter-Resolutions (I missed New Years, my bad), I have pledged to not buy any new books until the following books have either been completely read, or sold to a bookstore in town:

1. The Master and Margarita; Mikhail Bulgakov. (This actually belongs to Kristina, I desperately need to return it, so it tops the list.)
2. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius; Dave Eggers.
3. Mary Called Magdalene; Margaret George. (This one is Dana's)
4. The Godmother; Carrie Adams.
5. The Pillars of the Earth; Ken Follett.
6. Things I've Been Silent About; Azar Nafisi.
7. Brida; Paulo Coelho.
8. The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks; E. Lockhart.
9. I Am Charlotte Simmons; Tom Wolfe. (Sasha's)
10. A Man Without a Country; Kurt Vonnegut.
11. Three Cups of Tea; Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.
12. C'est La Vie; Suzy Gershman.
13. The Year of Magical Thinking; Joan Didion.
14. Leave Me Alone, I'm Reading; Maureen Corrigan.
15. Little Chapel on the River; Gwedolyn Bounds.
16. A Million Little Pieces; James Frey.
17. The Bookseller of Kabul; Asne Seierstad.
18. Galileo's Daughter; Dava Sobel.
19. The Gathering; Anne Enright.
20. Name All the Animals; Alison Smith.
21. Elizabeth: The Struggle for the Throne; David Starkey.
22. The Professor and the Madman: A tale of murder, insanity, and the making of the Oxford English Dictionary; Simon Winchester.
23. Going Home; Harriet Evans.
24. The Line of Beauty; Alan Hollinghurst.
25. The First Princess of Wales; Karen Harper.
26. The Golden Spruce; John Valiant.
27. The History of Love; Nicole Krauss.
28. Selected Stories; Alice Munro.
29. Love Walked In; Marisa De Los Santos.
30. The Wonder Spot; Melissa Bank.

It's a strange combination of books: Booker Prize winners, chick lit, historical fiction, memoirs, etc. But I think I'll enjoy each of them, and I know I'll enjoy feeling like I read everything I bought.

I'll let y'all know how it goes.

You'll have to pass along any recommendations from this list because quite a few sound very, very intriguing.

P.S. I'm the worst at keeping things secret, so I have to tell you that I asked my friend to make you a sting-ray lamp. :) I asked her to make it smaller than the sea turtle (which is three times the size of my head) so it's easy to mail to you when it's finished. I can't wait til it's done! However, she is working on beach art right now for a show she has coming up in June, so I don't know when yours will be done.

I read and loved The Year of Magical Thinking. However, I might be biased because I've read and loved almost everything Joan Didion. Let me know if anything else on here is worthwhile. I've been a slacker with books recently.
